Mad Love for the BBQ – Sonny’s Bar-B-Q

I grew up in North Carolina. One of the food groups in N.C. is Bar-B-Q. Pork BBQ to be specific. It’s one of the best things about living in that part of the country. My favorite is Speedy’s  in Lexington. There are two styles in N.C. (others such as Memphis, Kansas City, and Texas are awesome too, but I’ll talk about them later). The Eastern Style is usually made from the whole hog and has a vinegar base for the sauce. The Western Style, my favorite, is made from the shoulder alone and when smoked properly is a real sweet treat. There’s nothing like biting into that sweet smokey juicy goodness! Anyway, outside of N.C. I’ve found very few BBQ places that I have found to be all that great. Down here in Orlando, however, we’ve found one that’s become one of our favorite places to eat, Sonny’s Bar-B-Q.

Sonny’s is actually a large chain of BBQ joints, but since they cook the meats using an open pit, each restaurant really does feel unique. My favorite at Sonny’s is the pulled pork dinner. It comes with a little sauce on it (it’s a sweet, Memphis or KC style sauce) and you can get several kinds of sides like fries, cole slaw, beans, or a salad from the salad bar. My wife loves their chicken and ribs combo. The chicken and ribs are both prepared with the same sauce that’s on the pulled pork, and they’re very juicy and tender. (See the photo’s on our facebook page) The prices are really great, and there are daily specials including all you can eats for less than $10! We had our entire meal, including the massive glasses of sweet iced tea and tip for $30. The staff are really friendly and the food comes out very quick, usually within 10 minutes of ordering. The place is also very family friendly, so the kids will love eating there too.

Needless to say, we’ll be heading back real soon. I love my barbeque and Sunny’s does it right. Got mad love for Sonny’s!
